News from Hearing Loss Association of America

As part of the program funded by the recent grant to SHHH from the
Corporation for National and Community Service (http://www.cns.gov), we're
looking for SHHH members with hearing loss who have had or are having
successful experiences participating in CNCS programs. The purpose of this
is to help attract SHHH members into these programs. The success could be
based on a number of different variables----satisfying/important work,
significant achievements, good people, continuing friendships, actual
employment, increased self-confidence, and/or effective accommodation of
one's hearing loss. Not all of these variables may be present; success is
individually defined!

CNCS programs cover those in AmeriCorps, the National Senior Service Corps,
and Learn and Serve America. Because it's possible some of these programs
are not easily identifiable as CNCS programs, here's some more information
about the CNCS programs below:

AmeriCorps programs include VISTA, National Civilian Community Corps, and
certain local and state programs (which can be found at
http://www.americorps.org/joining/direct/index.html)

The Senior Corps (http://www.seniorcorps.org/joining/finding_nssc.html)
includes RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs), Foster Grandparents,
and Senior Companions.

Learn and Serve America programs, implemented by state education agencies,
schools, colleges and universities, and Indian Tribes, can be founded at
http://www.learnandserve.org/about/index.html

If you did have a successful experience, please email me *privately* at
dmulvany@shhh.org with the the following info:

1. Name, type (AmeriCorps VISTA, Foster Grandparent, etc.) and location of
the organization
2. Approximate date of your service
3. What made the experience successful for you?
4. How do you think participating in this program affected you?
5. Did you have a hearing loss at the time that you served? Did this affect
your participation in any way? If yes, please describe how you and the
others in the program dealt with your hearing loss.
6. Please indicate whether you would prefer any details such as your name to
be confidential, or whether we have your permission to use your submission
for publicity.
7. How long have you been a member of SHHH?
8. Please add any other information you think is relevant.

If by chance you are inspired to become a CNCS service member for the first
time because of this email, please let me know! <g> It's important for us
to track how many SHHH members do become participants because of outreach
efforts such as this. However, I'll be sending out more information later
for people with hearing loss about joining a CNCS program.

Please feel free to forward this email to lists of SHHH members.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
